everyone but you
from everything is good (2000)

Now it's obvious.  It's as plain as the sun in the sky.  No one ever wanted to talk to you at parties, everyone rolls their eyes when you try the new shoes everyone's wearing, and if you stopped going out at all, no one would notice.   You could never keep up in class, you always got glue on everything and your lines were never clean.  And ever since the first school dance it's been setting you further and further to the side.  You don't belong, and this life was meant for everyone else.  Everyone else will find someone and be happy and even casual about it.  But you were never good enough.  So you can't sleep without the TV on.  The silence is thunderous.  At best, your life -- this empty exercise in keeping your head above water -- is a bridge to someone who will matter, and who will walk away from you to join the other kids at the dance.

even when you're sleeping
in you're out completely
is it impossible to tell where you begin?

make me like you wonder
if april makes you younger

did you really believe?
did everything you were told
nothing really works, it's over

and i don't feel like going to sleep right now
but i'm tired and disappearing
you don't mean to be like this
good thing none of this was real
now that everyone but you is making paper planes to leave
i don't believe this is me

only when you're leaving
did you really believe what happened happened?
promised me you'd come
rest easy

and i don't feel like starting over
when it's opening you so what
you didn't mean to be like this
so insincere in leaving now that you're not
everyone but you is telling secrets, sitting still
can't let it be
this wasn't real
